Quality is an item modifier that can affect various mechanics. The scale of quality is:

  • Terrible(-3)
  • Crude(-2)
  • Cheap(-1)
  • Average(+0)
  • Quality(+1)
  • Superior(+2)
  • Exceptional(+3)
  • Legendary(+4)

Legendary(+4) quality is typically reserved for unique artifacts and special occasions, and will not ever be commonly achievable by everyday crafting at even the highest skill level with even the greatest of RNG luck.

Effects

Quality can have a variety of effects, based on the type of item. Some of these effects include:

  • Short descriptions of most items will display their quality if they are anything but Average(+0)
  • Market value (items of lower qualities may not be sellable at all)
  • Armor Hindrance for armor pieces (higher quality means slightly less hindrance)
  • Damage reduction effectiveness of armor pieces
  • Weight capacity of containers (backpacks, satchels, pouches, etc.)
  • Morale effects of food items
  • Warmth value of clothing (reducing the rate of the wearer freezing in cold weather)
  • Efficiency of felling trees with axes
  • Effectiveness of lockpicks
  • The rate at which a rope will lose durability when used for climbing
