The Lost Lands are dangerous place, filled with bandits, infested, nethrim and evil, however not everyone wishes to fight. In regard to this, here are some methods to avoid combat using basic commands in the game.
Contents
Peer
They can't attack you if you're not in the same room. Peer allows you to look into other rooms from an adjacent one and see all of the nonhidden contents, in example peer north would let me look into the swamp north of myself and see that infested bandit waiting for me. While this isn't great for spotting hidden targets, it is good for noticing many things. Note that heavy mist and fog will prevent you from seeing into and out of rooms at times in the wilderness and in some areas.
Positioning
The position avoid command is automatic on entering a new room, but allows you to stay out of reach of enemies at least part of the time, no matter your combat skill. This can mean the difference between life and death for some.
Just Run
Fleeing when you don't fight isn't cowardice at all. If you get into a dangerous situation or someone threatens your Artisan character with a weapon, just flee in whichever direction will be safe enough. Attempting to exit combat does incur round time, but it is generally less round time than attempting to attack again.
Hired Help
Most of all, hire some player characters to guard you during dangerous situations or clean your mine if you have a sudden infestation of spiders, for example. Many won't request pay, but some will ask for some form of reimbursement.
