I've been playing the grinding game a bit and generally this is how it goes:
1) Grind up main spell circle until I can't get learning in the area I'm in.
2) Grind up melee/weapon ability to increase parry/dodge so I can move on to the next level.
Does staves work the same way? You have to attack with a stave to get the parry benefit from it?
I would love it if we could get enchanted staves for casters that scale off your highest spell circle for parry.
Any help/thoughts/direction on how to lessen the grind would be appreciated.
Staves
Re: Staves
You also get skillgains from parrying. There aren't any staffs that draw on magical knowledge to grant parry, as in the CLOK world that doesn't really make any sense. I believe your magical character is a Rook, in which case I'd recommend researching Rasui's Cryosorcerous Disc, which grants block depending on your magical skills.
Re: Staves
I have the disc, but it doesn't always proc which might need to be looked at? I often find that I'm dodging or parrying when attacked instead of blocking. Additionally, the energy drain to have two channels of sorcery and cryomancy to keep the disc up allows me to maybe kill around 8 things before I'm on the verge of tired. I'm hoping that when I get Journeyman: Channeling this drain will lessen and that's currently what I'm working on right now.
That being said, casting still feels like I am at a deficit when it comes to combat skills because I get drained of energy so quickly and I feel like I'm having to learn both a melee/weapon skill in addition to leveling casting combat tactics.
I'm totally open to changing anything but this is a genuine concern that after having been able to readily examine both sides for the past month and can clearly see why people get frustrated with playing a caster. Which is why I suggested the stave implementation to help lessen the need to learn the other side for defense.

Re: Staves
It's not just casters who experience this, but ranged weapons users as well. Bows and firearms give no parry chance either, so you've actually got it better than them with the option of using Disc. If you don't find Disc sufficient for your needs, it may be worth your time to train up the Dodge skill.
Disc shouldn't work at all if you're holding any weapons or shields. You should be able to dodge as well as block with Disc, but not parry. You mentioned parrying at times, so my guess is you're holding a weapon in hand, which prevents Disc from working.

Re: Staves
Wait, it's not supposed to work with a single weapon in hand? It doesn't work when I dual wield, but if I'm holding a single rapier I get both a parry and a block roll. I thought it was a part of the Disc...
