This situation definitely need some serious attention, and I'm sure it didn't help that for a long while there was a bug preventing armor hindrance from occurring, so people had gotten used to not being affected by that until the day it was suddenly fixed. A lot of ideas are being mulled over, and the way we'll probably go is to lean more into class specializations being suited to specific armor types, rather than just requiring enough skill grind. In the past when it has boiled down to just having enough time to grind up the Armor Use Skill, the result has been the majority of characters wearing the heaviest armor possible because there's no reason for them not to. Channelers were probably the most discouraged from heavy armor because it interfered with channeling, but even so it was quite common to see Rooks and even the occasional Elemancer tromping around in full plate. Oh, and stealth users because of the armor stealth penalties, which are not currently implemented in the newer codebase but will be when I can get around to that.

Feedback, suggestions, patience, and tact are all appreciated, especially right now when we're still in a pretty chaotic stage development-wise! My sincerest thanks for all the patience and effort people have been putting in to help hone the game into one that feels good to play. And my apologies to the folks suffering from armor woes at the moment. There's a lot to do all over the place, but this issue is sitting up in the top tier of the Priority Pile.

Rather than wax on about it in detail, I think the logs provided below can speak for themselves.

This was awful. Against a mob with roughly half my die sides, I was completely unable to effectively guard another player. I have twice its skill. This should be trivial. I went in with a two-handed weapon, thinking, 'surely the sheer skill advantage will let me use a bigger weapon to kill these weak mobs quicker.'

I was wrong.

As a Guardian, I feel physically incapable of performing my basic, expected role, of guarding people.

I can't even tell where all of the negative rerolls are coming from. Am I getting both my own, and the other player's, armor hindrance penalties stacked together? I have no idea.
What's going on here? Why do I have -1.5x rerolls on a parry defense? Why is it not shown in the breakdown? I am at Enc 2. I should not have that high of a penalty to parry. Am I inheriting the other player's penalties?

Here's the whole encounter, in which a single golem with half my skill forces me to retreat.
God forbid I fight something at my own skill level in a group.

I don't know what I can do or how I can improve to make this not happen again in exactly the same way next time. It feels like the hours put into the skill grind are worthless, because they clearly aren't doing anything for me here.

God forbid I fight something at my own skill level in a group.

I don't know what I can do or how I can improve to make this not happen again in exactly the same way next time. It feels like the hours put into the skill grind are worthless, because they clearly aren't doing anything for me here.

To my knowledge, Enc 2 adds 1 negative reroll to defenses.

The 0.5x extra I'm not a hundred percent sure-perhaps your two handed warmaul has a negative to parrying with it, like a Stiletto does? You should be able to check that by Examining.

I think you'll find your Guardian skills more applicable when using a shield, though. For those who wish to protect people by using two handed weapons to smash their enemies into the dirt, a dreadaught or berserker would usually be the better option.

As is, you only have one defensive option-that being the Parry you have locked in as your only defensive, as opposed to both block and parry with a shield in hand, which doubles your effectiveness.


Doesn't seem like you have parry profiency either, which is natural for a guardian but doesn't help you with this task.


Overall, I think the biggest source of your woes is the enemy you're fighting, above all else-bone golems are incredibly tanky, hard hitting mobs. Walking in with someone who's shortsword is doing two damage while you tank hits for two, with a suboptimal defensive layout... I can absolutely see why you had to back off.


Had you been fighting, say, Drakes with this setup which are literally double the skill of a Bone Golem, you'd have been fine. Some things are just more dangerous skill point for skill point than others, and Bone Golems are one of them.

Whether or not what you encountered was due to encumbrance (2 starts having penalties) or heavy armor, there definitely seems to be something in the background that ensured it was all [crap] for you.

Glancing over your log, you ranged from between 1.25x towards -6.75x for your offense rolls alone (and while I'm not going to crunch the numbers, the range suggests they were mostly in the negative) and between 1x and -3.5x for defensive rolls (which again suggests the same).

With those sort of rerolls in place, you were always going to get hit a lot and there is nothing you can do as a player to mitigate that beyond take it. It's a great log to show just why heavy armor is pointless with its current implementation because you're going to get hit, and you're never going to mitigate enough damage to make it worthwhile for anything beyond a short and targeted hunt. Its what happens when goal based mechanics bleed into gain based.

And that's without even bringing skill gain into the equation! Imagine, doing all that, getting utterly rocked and then being told, "That wasn't difficult enough to get 0.01 skill."

Yes, I'm not sure how to make use of this advice. I am using heavy armor, which is, itself, suboptimal, evidently.

It's still worth acknowledging the time and effort that goes into reading and responding, though, hence the reply.
