Why don't you group?
The other thing is that there is no personal communication. I know it's your choice, but you're shooting yourself in the foot here as far as grouping. I'm not going to ask for a group over ESP. I almost never play the type of character that would post a personal ad or join a dating site. It's essentially the same thing.
I am confused by this. What do you mean by saying there is no personal communication? Are you the person who is choosing to shun personal communication, or is it someone else's choice you are referring to, and you think something is missing? We seem to have many forms of communication available to us. We can speak, whisper, post on the town post boards (in the game, not this BBS), send mail through a post office, use ESP, or even just use descriptive emotes in the same room as another person in such a way that you would encourage them to act and speak to you first, in reaction to your emotes. For instance, if I were anti-social or shy and needed healing, I could emote limping, or wincing in pain, and so on, and I believe most people would offer to heal me if they were capable, or tell me where to find the infirmary, if they were not.
I have found it very easy to find reasons to communicate with people, even though my character is not necessarily a social one. Rasui is an old man, incapable of doing many things on his own. I have met many people and had wonderful interactions and discussions with them because of this, started off by simply by asking for someone to pull a handcart for me, or to escort me from town to town, or to lift and carry heavy things for me. It is easy to find reasons to seek interaction with other players, even if you are not looking for a hunting partner.

I think you completely missed the context of the discussion. Personal communication in this context is more point to point long range communication (think the tell command, but IC).
The whole thread is in the context of forming a group. LFG services on this mud are fairly limited. The main methods of communication are ESP, post office, and being in the same room (talking, whispering, etc). None of those are very good tools to allow people to find you (or vice versa) and get organized into a group, with exception to ESP. The problem with ESP is that you're broadcasting to everyone within hundreds of miles your intent to go hunting somewhere. That just seems a little OOC for me, unless my character is a serious extravert. There isn't really a central meeting place (the closest thing is probably the town center in Shadgard) to find a group to go hunt.

We'll gladly take suggestions for improvement. Several people make use of the colored tuners for more personal/private ESP communication when grouping together. As you said, the Shadgard commons is a good general meeting place that most people use (minus Corvus Outpost folk, naturally). Public meeting places are really up to players to determine, rather than staff, anyway. We're not going to somehow force players to use one singular meeting spot. The Commons is a central area that gets a lot of traffic, with places to sit, and is the location of the post board for easily keeping up with what's going on. Another popular spot is the Hearth and Home common room, with seating and food/drink options, usually the main meeting spot when it's raining or snowing and thus problematic to meet outside.
The lore compels me!

Epic events that are potentially threatening to a large portion of the player base is always a surefire cure for more socializing.

I generally don't group because of several reasons. One main reason is because I'm a very casual player and tend to be afk quite a bit from multitasking between mudding and real life chores. Second reason is that I like to explore things on my own. Mudding is like reading a book at my own pace. Some parts I like to savor and other parts I don't mind rushing through. Sometimes I would spend hours in one location reading room descriptions and exploring and then on a spur of the moment decide to go to market to shop for goodies for my collection. Third reason is I have OOC off most of the time. I would rather have OOC off all the time but sometimes I got bored because there's hardly anyone using the other channels. I like to use OOC mainly for asking newbie questions. Communicate using ESP, mail, board posting or just meeting them IC are the preferred methods. Sometimes, I would log and people would say Hi over OOC and I wouldn't know because OOC is off. Then everyone would think he's antisocial and he doesn't even say anything. Then when I meet them IC and say Hi, they ignore me. That's the communication barrier. I think I grouped a couple of times. One time was helping a new person explore a new place. Another time was responding to a board posting requesting assistance.

Ardor doesn't group much because, well, most of the time he is mining. He cannot fight if his life depends on it, even though he looks all shiny in his full plate armor. And to be honest, group mining with someone of lower skill would just make it a lot more dangerous for both of us.
If I find one of those tombs while mining or flood my mine with worms, I usually ask for help very quickly (on ESP) and more often than not I find someone to get rid of the worms/undead so we split the loot or I pay them and they are on their way again and I am back to mining.

[FROM Rithiel (OOC)]: Be careful what you wish for.
smh, Ardor runs around wearing full masterpiece blue armor... but his highest combat skill, on the other hand.
I personally would group, but I find it troublesome to find someone of my skill level. I find it would bother or take time from a higher skilled player, i.e. Kiyaani or Evelyn, ruin someone's rp, i.e. Lae or Kian, or the mob would be troublesome for a lower skilled player.
If I ever get over run by like 5 mobs with my task monster, I usually ask for help on ESP, and Evelyn ends up dropping everything to help me, usually. Then I'm just back to my grinding, trying to get to certain abilities.
Other things like collecting herbs and the like I also group together with people, but generally I find there's little need to go with a partner.
If you want to take a suggestion on forcing more grouping, I suggest more large scale events where more people are aware of a situation. I like the current plots that are ongoing, but there's far too little information and no one is willing to share.

I have nothing productive to say, therefore, I must be heard!
From what I am reading it looks like people need a reason to group. Gad always has expeditions and work needing to be done. From those who go with Gad on his expeditions know that it can be lucrative. Don't worry about skill level because there are many areas to fight. He usually has posts on the boards in Shadgard and Mistral Lake looking for people willing to work. Just contact him.
A few weeks ago Emleth was over run with infested and Lae, Spearhead, and Gad called out for more to come help. Even if you feel you are not skilled to fight -- mob and mounted tactics help reduce critter defenses to bring down more skilled opponents. If all you know is first aid and herbalism come out and help the wounded or drag the dead out to safety.

Stop holding my character hostage.
Gad I can't tell you how awesome that all is. Sadly I still think a mechanical reason to do so would bump the amount of normal day to day grouping that occurs.
