Random Musing on Fishing: Clok Edition

Post by Zeldryn »

HAI GAIS!

First and foremost, big, big, big, big, big thanks to Guillaumo. This dude is awesome, well spoken, and hits on every suggestion I ever wanted to suggest myself.

So, I actually don't have much to say on this one specifically. But that's because a large degree of it has been covered already by him. I wanted to link all of the amazing suggestions offered so they can travel over here, and provoke the discussion in a similar capacity to my hunting thread.

First, read this thread by Guillaumo, and all of the suggestions offered. They're literally all fantastic: https://cogg.contrarium.net/bbs/viewtop ... it=fishing

Experience doesn't matter as much here, obviously, but a lot of the suggestions offered are still what I would refer to as sick, nasty, and rad, respectively.

However, in much the same vein as I asked in my hunting thread: if you have suggestions for fish, fishing adjacent things, fishing tools, or descriptions for fish-- place them here! I want to fish more! I want more people to fish more!
You declaratively shout, "frack Corvus. Support Shadgardians."
Zeldryn nods simply, that said, folding his arms back beneath a striated fiery-orange wool poncho.
Several townsfolk cheer in response to Zeldryn's shout!

I think my only wishlist item would be letting us attach small fish in hopes of catching a bigger fish. When I catch a fish that is 6 inches or less, sometimes I release it back to the river and sometimes I cook it up to eat, but I'd love to have that third option of setting them on the hook and seeing what I can catch.

Just popping in here to say that I'm a big fan of all of the suggestions given in the previous game, and fishing in general. I would like to ask a simple thing, though. It'd be really nice if successfully pulling a fish gave you practice. I'm still not sure how the fishing system works (I've been meaning to write some scripts to analyze numbers), but sometimes I pull in a fish after a failure and get absolutely no skill at all. Thanks, that was it. A thing or two to make getting a high enough skill to reasonably fish would be nice. It's really hard, right now. Everything I've found rolls really high. Which is actually weirdly fun.
Edit: Also, fishing practice for submitting a record would be awesome. Just as a little incentive. All it does right now is give experience (which does nothing) and bragging rights (which is the most important,. obviously).

A man walking through stops to glare at Ceridwenn and says, "Hey, lady! Pack your things, I'm kickin' you outta town for the crime of putting your filthy boots up on the table like a heathen!" Someone from a nearby table then laughs, "Jord, stop being a jackwagon, they'd never let you wear a militia badge!" The first man then snickers and ambles, rather drunkenly it appears, to join his friend at the other table.

Well, I got into the big suggestion of a combat-like system, and I came up with all these ideas:

OBSERVE FISH or STUDY FISH -> Returns behavioral hints like:
"The fish is swimming erratically, making sudden directional changes"
"The fish seems to prefer staying deep, making occasional upward rushes"

Lets you be prepared for what moves you may have to have queued up, and possibly gives you a partial reroll for your pulls at the cost of losing some time.

Rod Moves:
SNAP - Quick directional change to counter fish movement
FEINT - Intentionally create slack to bait an aggressive run
SWEEP - Wide rod movement to control fish direction
LIFT - Raise rod tip to prevent diving

Zone-Based Fish Behavior:
- Deep pools: Fish tend to dive and use depth for leverage
- Rapids: Fish use current to aid escape attempts
-Shallows: More left/right movement patterns
-Under-bank: Fish attempt to tangle line around obstacles

Stance idea: Set your tactics when casting:

FISH PATIENT

Possible stances could include:
1. PATIENT
- Slower but more controlled reeling
- Better at detecting fish behavior patterns
- Higher chance of catching larger fish
- Bonus to maintaining line tension
- Could get extra OBSERVE information
2. MOBILE
- Ability to move along the bank/shore while fighting
- Better at countering aggressive runs
- Can recover from bad positions more easily
- Might allow "chasing" the fish downstream
- Possible bonus to landing fish in difficult terrain
3. TECHNICAL
- Focus on precise rod control
- Better at executing special techniques
- Reduced line stress during complex maneuvers
- Higher success rate with advanced baits/lures
- Could get better timing windows for special moves
4. AGGRESSIVE
- Faster reeling when opportunities arise
- Better at forcing confrontations
- Higher risk/reward on PULL commands
- Might tire out the fish faster but with more risk
- Could counter defensive fish behavior better

Each stance could have specific advantages against certain fish behaviors or in particular environments. For example, PATIENT might be better in deep pools, while MOBILE could excel in river fishing where the fish might try to use the current.

At about twenty skill, I stopped getting the full skill up per successful pull, even when the fish rolls over a hundred and fifty sides above me. Is the amount of practice gained based on the size of fish, or some other factor? Also, if this continues, the skill gain is going to peter out long before I can reasonably get anywhere, I would suspect. I'll post again, if I get to that point, but I'm nervous.

Suggestion. A way to determine the heaviest / biggest fish in a container, for the records and things. Maybe it could be sort of based on fishing skill, because you'd just be eyeballing it / lifting them to see, I'd think.
