If I'm only holding one shield in my hand and nothing in my offhand, would it be possible to not flail around with my fists doing nothing, and instead attack with the shield? This is doable already by mashing the "SHOVE" key with the shield in the right hand slot, so it'd just be like automating the shield bash in BATTLE.
It's pretty ineffective way to battle, but I always thought it was silly that I have a perfectly good shield to shove or smash with and I opt to punch with my free hand.
