Quitting when danger is imminent, or "slamming"

Post by Rias »

There's a thing I know of under the term "slamming", which is basically logging out of the game when danger is imminent. Perhaps a hostile just arrived where you thought you were safe. Maybe that battle isn't going quite as well as you hoped. Uh-oh, two more hostiles just showed up and now I'm in actual danger! Well, I'll just log out and come back later when they're gone.

Don't do this.

It makes me mad. It will not end well for you. Expect OOC consequences and penalties (skill reductions, skillgain dampeners, etc.) for your OOC cheating.

Note: It makes me especially mad when it's a part of an automated script fail-safe.

I used to go out of my way to make sure slammers died when they came back.

Bad me.

...

Hi everyone, btw. Nice to see CLOK is still doing so well.

Note to slammers: We will give Landion the power to make you die when you come back.

I sometimes do this, but not because I am trying to get out of a conflict. I have a nasty tendency to lose connection periodically and I will suddenly log out from loss of connection. I just hope it will be easy to tell when I am losing my connectiom and if I am doing this on purpose; I don't want to end up punished for my terrible signal quality.

At least one other mud I played made the 'quit' command not work when you were in battle.

You would type 'quit', and instead of quitting, it gave a message to the effect you can't quit while in combat!

(Of course, that other mud only had one position, 'Engage', so to speak.)

I've seen MUDs take a number of solutions for this, including:

a timer for how soon after combat you can log out (sometimes with an IC explanation to allow for an IC notification on when you can log out and take other anti-combat actions, such as "Your heart stops pounding"),
only allowing log out in specific rooms that were relatively safe compared to their surroundings, or reasonable places to sleep,
keeping your character in-game (asleep) even after log out.

Perhaps one of these could be used if it becomes a significant problem?
You also notice the corpse of a canim scavenger (x169).
