Building a construction from multiple types of wood

It would be nice to be able to make a carpentry item out of more than one type of wood.

So the end product would be "a wooden desk'.
I'm not knowledgeable to recommend if there should be a slight quality penalty on this or not. I know fine guitars are made from multiple types of wood, but unsure if this should relate to carpentry.
