You can now craft staffs and flatbows using branches acquired via logging. A large branch must be used.
First, while holding the branch in one hand and a dagger in the other, type CARVE. This will cause you to carve the bark off the branch and turn it into a stave.
Next, type either CARVE STAFF or CARVE FLATBOW. You will begin carving away at the stave in an attempt to craft your item. Continue to CARVE STAFF/FLATBOW until you are informed that you are now holding your finished item.
The staff you can use once you've finished carving. For the flatbow, once you're done carving, head to Alahnna's Archery and purchase a bowstring (they're quite cheap) and, while holding the flatbow stave in one hand and the bowstring in the other, type ATTACH and you'll be ready to use your newly-crafted bow. Note that to start off, the items will be poor quality and won't be as effective as store-bought equivalents, but if you get good enough, you'll be able to craft items better than those you would purchase at a store.
All these actions will increase your Woodworking skill, which is meant to be a general skill applied to all woodworking projects. More complicated items will require specialized branches of woodworking, to come at a later date.
