Carpentry and Sawing

Saws are now available in the blacksmith areas, and Mistral Lake general store.

These can be used to SAW flitches into planks of various types which can be sold to the market and will likely be used in future releases.

How successful you are at creating a plank is dependent upon the new Carpentry skill which will be used in the future for other additions. Poor quality planks won't sell very well.

Will carpentry use nails?

Probably down the road.

Build has been released for testing.

This may still be very buggy.

To get started, snag a work hammer from a blacksmith shop and get to work. You will need to have planks of the correct type and nails either in the area, or in a wagon or handcart in the area for you to be able to build something.

Once you have the needed supplies, take them to the area in which you wish to build and BUILD!

This will create a setup of contstruction that you will need to BUILD on for a time to complete your work.

This is largely in test mode, so expect bugs and adjustments.

Can you make planks of wood from trees on your own? Or do you have to buy them?

by Landion
Yes, you can.

Step by step summary:

- Chop down a tree using FELL
- CHOP the tree, removing branches and creating logs
- Take the logs to a sawmill and create flitches
- SAW flitches into planks
- BUILD using planks and nails

(Nails are created via blacksmithing.)

Okay. Can you make houses or anything big?

You'd have to buy land first I think before something like that. Say a mining claim and then you can build a hut or something.

Carpentry can help you in your mine or assist in building furniture. At this time you cannot build homes, that is not to say that in the future something like this might not be available, but it is not something you can do now.

Would 'Tanning Racks' and 'Workbenches' count as furniture?

by Landion
Not currently. We may have other plans for those specific tools.

I'll work on adding some carpentry trainers.

Dennis in Corvus and the mining foreman in Shadgard now train Carpentry.

So playing around with building and carpentry. Would it be possible to increase the skillgain per 'build' command?

As it is, every instance of typing 'build' gives you (when you're training) 0.04 skillgain, at a roundtime of 30 seconds, and -40 energy.

Ah, good point. Yes, I think I can adjust that up a bit.

Suggestion: When you build something, you will be able to choose and make designs off of a design list?

by Landion
Yeah, I want to add customization options down the road.

Also, I'm pretty sure the supports I made last night didn't use ALL of the materials I had in the room.

Hrm, I'll have to do some extra testing and I'd appreciate any help on this too as it is the most complicated code part of this system.

It should be taking only what is required to build that piece, and leaving any extras behind.

Sure thing. Next time I build something, I'll get a log of the room before and after.
