Improvised additions to weapons

Could it be possible to add/hammer nails into wooden weapons with non-metal heads? Adding nails, other things, into weapons like a quarterstaff, club, maul, etc. would be nice, possibly with an additional damage (pierce/slash?) on top of the normal damage, similar to how some flanged weapons do additional piercing damage.
