Signs/Permit info for communal crafting areas.

Post by Enepttastic »

I think it may help newcomers, as well as anyone who's never touched crafting before and hadn't already come across this information, to perhaps expand the info on the permits as well as add some signs to the outside of the crafting areas.

For example: A Workshop Permit
"This permit allows the bearer to enter and use the facilities of the local workshop for use in smelting and metalworking for one hour. This includes access to the smelter(s), forge, anvil and bar cutter. Forging hammers and tongs are not provided and can be purchased by a blacksmith."

Aside: Admittedly that example reminds me of the chicken and egg discussion that floats around in Dwarf Fortress. Can't make an anvil without an anvil, thus where did the first anvil come from? :p

As for signs, don't really have a decent example to offer but similar premise, inform of the need of the permit and where to get it, mention what's available and what tools the character may want to bring.

Edit: Added a link to actually explain that the anvil comment was humorous.

In-game: Atali: Punching things while wearing (mostly)full plate because she likes hearing the "ping."

why do you need an anvil to make an anvil? I would figure it would be easier to just make a mold and pour liquid metal into it than to try to hammer something as bulky and heavy as an anvil. (This from a guy who knows nothing whatsoever about any kind of metal working)

Historically, the first hammer and anvils were any two hard things you could bang together with something (metal) in between to shape it. So the first anvil might have been a big rock in the ground that you banged on with another heavy rock. When it comes to modern forged vs. cast anvils, forged anvils are much better in quality because, typically, the metal used in the forging process is of better quality AND the forging process itself allows the anvil maker to control the properties of the metal in a way that it is more suitable to use as an anvil (I.e. reflects the force of a hammer blow back into the work as opposed to absorbing that energy). Some ingenius manufacturers have found a way to cut cost while still providing similar performance to a forged anvil by making the body of the anvil from cast steel and then welding a forged steel plate on top as the face, BUT any blacksmith would tell you to use a fully forged anvil if at all possible, simply because it is the absolute top of the line when it comes to getting the most results out of the least amount of work (barring pneumatic/mechanical/drop hammers).

Permit area work has been on our to do list for quite some time now. I made a couple minor adjustments and started some improvements in a testing capacity earlier today. Hope to be able to share it with y'all soon.

OKay, the first batch of permit changes are now LIVE. :-D

Here's what you need to know.

-You can now access multiple work areas at once without loosing access to previously accessed work areas before their time expires.

-You don't have to buy permits anymore, yay! Instead, you will be prompted to hand over riln when you attempt to enter a work area. If you attempt a second time, you will pay.

-The default work area time is now 25 riln for 2 chimes as apposed to the previous 50 riln for 1 bell.

-Work area timers are now based on server time. You have 30 minutes of *REAL* time to utilize a work area after it is paid for - your timer will keep running even if you log out.

-We're working on a way to add extra time on the fly without having to leave the room.

pay
A worker nods to you and says, "That'll be twenty-five riln for two more chimes."
(Please enter pay confirm to pay.)

pay confirm
A worker nods to you and informs you that you may use the facilities for two additional chimes.
Done!
