A spyglass would assist in navigating through the wilderness. Yes, we have maps, however, those only work (for screen reader users, anyway), at a known landmark. A spyglass would allow that to change slightly. Also, if someone is lost in the wilderness, it might also lend a hand. Plus, they would be cool! For example, with a spyglass held in your hand:

scan
You put the spyglass up to your eye, scanning the horizon for notable landmarks.
Far to the northwest, you see a jumble of ruins.
Slightly to the northwest, you see a preserve of some kind.
A little to the north, you see two buildings.

If one of these landmarks catches your interest you can:
scan north
placing the spyglass to your eye, you focus it to the north and see...
Two buildings are in the middle of a fork.

Or, you can move closer to a landmark, for example, you head northwestward and use the glass again:

scan
Placing the spyglass up to your eye you see,
slightly northwest, you see some city ruins. You recall this to be valeria. (obviously, you would have had to visit there to recall it.
a ways to the northwest, you see a mountain pass. You can't be sure, but you think it might be eben pass.

this would allow us to at least triangulate on certain areas of interest. With more experience, or a navigation skill, perhaps, you can use it to find specific areas (southern wetlands).

Very good idea.
I propose the slight quirk of the risk of your spyglass being spotted if you're close to someone else. I have this image of one of those western stories where the bad spy gets spotted because sun reflected off the spyglass.

This has been brought up a couple times before, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, it wouldn't really be appropriate with the way we have the wilderness currently set up. Each room could be considered a few square miles at least. The distance isn't strictly defined, but we generally say traveling 1 room = traveling a league.
