Refining Cinnabar

Post by Lun »

Cinnabar is a main source of liquid mercury, which is extracted from crushed cinnabar ore roasted in rotary furnaces. Pure mercury separates from sulfur in this process and easily evaporates. A condensing column is used to collect the liquid metal, which is most often shipped in iron flasks.

The process could either be followed as such, or simply by putting it in the regular furnace. Liquid mercury has many applications, such as thermometers for scientific endeavors and roleplaying, or for weapon coating in order to apply damage over time poisons.

Or hat making. Wasn't mercury used for hatmaking and it tended to drive hatmakers crazy, creating the term mad hatter?

It was actually an ingredient in the dyes they used. Because as humans we love using things in our dyes and paints that are poison to our systems.
