Consumable RP Props As A Money Sink

Post by Lysse »

It'd be cool to see some consumable RP props added to the game - both for the fun of having little props, and for a minor riln sink for luxury items that won't create some kind of mechanical advantage for people to throw money at.

The first thing that came to mind was tobacco products - I'd love to see something like a tobacco pouch item that can be filled at the general store with tobacco, then you can use the LIGHT command on a pipe (which would use up a usage of tobacco, sort of how like unguents in jars worked in cogg) and for the next bell or so the pipe gets a little (smoking) tag, as well as having the different nouns associated with a pipe unlocked.

I think it'd be cool to see something similar with cigarettes and cigars too, as items that can be lit with the LIGHT command, get the (smoking) tag, and then get some special nouns unlocked.

A full tobacconist seems a bit too fancy for the Lost Lands, but that'd be a really cool festival stall as a place to buy different kinds of tobacco that have different cosmetic effects, along with fancier pipes, tobacco storage solutions, and cigarette cases and cigar boxes.

I'd probably make them pretty expensive - something like 10 uses of pouch for 500 riln - since it is a luxury item.

Chewing tobacco!

Pull a plug out of a pouch, bite it, and for a short while changes the SPIT social (if there is one) to expelling a stream of nastiness.

I'm super here for having little things you can emote with, like cigarettes/cigars/pipes. For reasons.

The Nuumic people would likely have simple cosmetics that could briefly alter your appearance, or perfumes. They'd be wildly expensive and only have a few uses.

I am all ears and future suggestions for this proposition and I find each of the suggestions already given wonderful. I look forwards to both hopefulling having appearance altering objects and socially excusable objects like cigarettes becoming available :P

Here's a list of random things that come to mind in this category of things. All implied to be expendable after several uses and pointlessly expensive, but don't press too hard on the luxury line to break theme.

-Hair wax: A tiny little tin of hair wax. Maybe diversify it into stuff specifically for facial hair, stuff for the hair on your head, and that sexy Hillfolk foot wax.
Effect: Maybe makes your hair look shinier? Maybe changes the style for a little while before it goes back to normal or you wash your head?

-Lotions like moisturizer/sun lotion/tanning oil
Effect: It done makes your skin softer. And moisturizes! Tanning oil might offer the chance for sunburn for the chance to give yourself some tanness for a few days, maybe.

-Shaving Cream
Effect: Lets you RP out shaving dem unsightly whiskers or maintain your flawless chrome dome.

-Hair Care products like shampoo/conditioner
Effect: Literally the same thing as soap, except it only works on your head. Temporarily changes the modifier of your hair to something like soft/silky/shiny until effect wears out.

-Cologne/perfume
Effect: Offers longer-lasting "you smell nice" modifiers.

-Nail files/Nail clippers that break down after several uses and can't be repaired
Effect: Trim your nails!

-Toothbrushes that wear down over time
Effect: Peace of mind

-Breathspray/mints/breath fresheners
Effect: Self-explanatory.

-Paper/cloth/leather hand fans
Effect: Cool yourself down on a sunny day.

-Telescopes/binoculars/monoculars
Effect: When you peer with one in hand, people can see you peering through it in the direction you're peering. Or looking up at the sky if you're looking up at the sky.

-Lighters
Effect: You can light things with them. but only if you load them up with firestones/emberbright oil, first. Basically it's just a rich guy lighting device that is literally no more efficient. In fact, it's less. Because when the firestones run out-- you still can't light with it. you just put the stones inside the lighter. HAHAHA. Take that, convenience. Make it a double whammy and that you can't smoke cigarettes without a lighter. because lighting a cigarette with firestones just breaks the cigarette if you fail an artifice roll.

-Confetti poppers
Effect: Annoy your friends, make a mess.

-paper Water balloons
Effect: Toss them at your friends, ruin their day. No, you can't fill them up with oil. That's another suggestion, silly.

-Firechangers/weird colored torches
Effect: Throw one of our fancy sticks in with your firewood and make it burn blue! or green! or frackin'.. Pink! I don't know!

-Incense
Effect: Make rooms smellier. (Make this a ton more expensive so people don't bulk buy it. make it expire, too, so if you burn it after too long it just smells like crap)

-Whetstones/sharpening rods/armor oil
Effect: Let's you RP doing regular maintenance on your edged implements without actually doing anything.

-Weapon/Armor polish
Effect: Makes your weapon/armor look shiny for a little while. Like soap for your gear!

-Sealing wax
Effect: Gives letter objects the "closed" modifier, making them need to be opened before they're read. Wax seal breaks when opened. Perhaps allows one to write a very short message such as a name or a single short sentence on the sealed letter that is also broken when the letter is opened.

-Frames
Effect: Put things inside of them, hang them on the wall.

I have one of these from the old game. Would love for them to make a comeback.

For the less palatable sort, money sinks could be found as in: Additives to food.

A green, odorless gel: Tasteless and looking a bit like ooze, a tiny amount is enough to give someone the burps for quite a while.
A pink, clear powder: Smells of raspberries, a little bit causes stomach pain and growling.
A clear ooze: Easily added into food, it can bring on severe gas and occasional diarrhea.

Just as ideas. Nothing fatal and can be added into food or drink. 1 use, causes digestive issues for a short period to the victim. Expensive.

I mentioned sealing wax above, but someone mentioned envelopes in character today, and it struck me as just a fantastic addition to this.

In particular if envelopes could be made in such a way that they can hold a (finite) number of paper/page items (and maybe include bank notes in that too).
