Woodworking

Post by Rithiel »

Now accepting ideas/requests for more woodworking objects. I'll say (for now) no furniture.

Trinkets that can be used as props or sold at the market (for considerably more than just a branch would), such as animal carvings.

Practice weapons with low damage ranges, so players can spar with each other with less chance of severe injury or death.

shin and arm guards made out of bound branches together or it would be better if they were cut out of logs. This can advance into laminate wood armor which has in fact been used before.

Main point being... Something vs Nothing for protection

Wooden armour would interfere even more with magic due to the residual life energy of the tree.
Possibly channellers could eventually use light metal armour or specially treated wood.

That would sort of screw over rangers majorly though.

Ideas I've thought of would be to use the logs. They can be 'notched' to prepare them to be part of a log home?

Or, carve/cut into planks for internal architecture of the home and for reinforcing mine shafts.
No longer GMing for CLOK.

A good rule of thumb in CLOK is that the tougher and denser the material, the more it interferes with and resists magic. Hence metallic armors make it particularly difficult to keep channeling. Organic materials such as wood and bone are actually the most often-used materials for magical purposes (enchanting, creating artifacts, etc.). You'll notice there's the Stave to Staff spell, which transfigures a wooden bow-stave to a staff and vice-versa - you will never see a spell to do the same for some sort of metallic weapon, due to metal's natural resistance to magical alteration. The same goes for the case of magical wands and staffs - you won't see them made of anything tougher than wood or bone.

The idea of wooden armor might be a possible option for channelers to have a bit heavier armor with less magical hindrance, though it wouldn't be as good at soaking damage as metal plate, and its durability would probably be rather low. Something we'll think about.

Wooden jewelry would be nifty, like beads or the talismans. :)

Anybody else imaging the scene in Hook when the Lost Boys arm themselves?

I can't believe I didn't think of this before, but TORCHES!

Edit:

Also crude fishing poles, maybe skewers for cooking kebabs?

I like the idea of making your own torches. It probably wouldn't take much more than taking a chopped branch and wrapping a resin/pitch-soaked rag around the end. I don't know that a woodworking check would be required.

How will we make pitch?
How will we make the cloth?

I know the orphanage was just released tonight, but perhaps we can carve some toys other than the trinkets. Maybe some dolls, figurines, wooden tops, and other things of that sort. It may be silly, but would be fun from an RP aspect.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Let us all snap our fingers at Rithiel, our local woodworking guru, to make it so.

Sorry Nootau, didn't see this before.

Pitch: Dry distillation of wood (heating it and letting tar/resin drip away).
Cloth: Rip up an old tunic or other cloth product, or produce your own at a loom.

I want to make it clear that I did not implement that because you snapped your fingers.

-make pipes to smoke weed. umm.. i meant hemp or tobacco.
-make fashionable wooden sandals. or just plain stilts so you can traverse the muddy manure covered street without getting soiled
-make wooden figurines. or your own favorite action figures.
-make wooden chopsticks so i can eat food in a more civilized way
