Sona studies structures

Thought I'd try and post here some of the "hidden details" of Sona's attempts to learn to learn proper construction.

The last few weeks, Sona has been taking note of structures around her, making sketches. Haiban's city gates, for example, Sona has been examining the bands of metal, inspecting their height, width, and depth, and how they were attached and connected to the gate itself.

She's been examining the bridges as well - both wooden and stone, gauging construction techniques with wood and stone, making diagrams, and doing some small scale tests with weights, and her own designs.

She's also been poking around various houses, her own and others, fully constructed homes, and destroyed homes, to take sketches, detailing similarities and differences of homes in materials used, foundations, and roofting.

unsurprisingly she's also been poking around and trying to find out how one constructs a forge, basic city works, like a watermill, writing to her family and colleagues in Grum, looking for any books and details on construction techniques for the above, mixtures, and how such mixtures can be achieved in the cases of sealants, cements, or whatever other things are used to mortar stone together, and how to fashion brick molds/stone molds.

Generally, what others might consider somewhat boring things, Sona is digging into with a passion.

I doubt this will see support, but I need to stop quashing Sona's RP avenues, because many may lack support. You may see her starting to push ahead with things that she's interested in exploring.

Can letters be easily sent out of the quarantine?

Nope. Being able to leave the quarantine area is very uncommon, and most of those who can leave are only able to access a sort of middle "neutral zone" that people within the Quarantine aren't allowed to access, other than those whose specific job it is to do just that. And, of course, the idea is that things can go into the Quarantine just fine, but nothing comes out (except riln, of course). Customs are extremely strict and paranoid, and likely don't let letters (packages are pretty unthinkable) out except for in very rare cases with very trusted individuals. Not worth the risk of trusting those quarantiners.

You might be able to get a letter out by being sneaky and bribing the right people, but that's generally not worth the risk for the bribees, to say nothing of the briber. Even then, it'd be unreliable at best. Not particularly good chances your letter would actually get where it's supposed to go. It'd also endanger the recipients - if someone found out they were receiving illegal communications from within the Quarantine, that'd be a serious problem.

So yeah, sorry. Once you're in the Quarantine, you can't really write home to tell the family how things are at Summer Camp.

Darn, figured if you can send riln in and out just find, letters at least would be ok.

Still, not going to let that get Sona down. She'll establish how to do these things, and these specialists already exist within the lost lands, doing some of these things already. They just need to speak up.

You can't really "send" riln out. The (few) traders that come into the Quarantine come in, sell their stuff to the desperate Quarantine inhabitants, and take the riln they made back out with them.

Hmm, I'm probably not understanding the troubles exactly. If the traders are getting in, and hearing, through word of mouth what people want, can get those things, and bring them back from outside the quarantine, then why wouldn't they? They'd just have to negotiate a price.

Hmm. I must have missed something outside this thread. I didn't see anything in your posts about asking after or requesting imported goods.

P.S. This is just me, and I'm not the man in charge. I will remind that I've mentioned more than a few times how the Lost Lands has become a tad too tame and domesticated for what it's supposed to be. Hamlets that were meant to be catastrophic event fodder ended up as well-developed permanent settlements (against my will and instructions when I was in charge, I might add). At this point, as far as I'm concerned at least (and Jirato has backed this sentiment up), I want to see hamlets and other significant wilderness slices of safe domestication dwindling, not growing. You're free to pursue what you're pursuing, but I wouldn't expect to see any significant successes in the vein of adding more safe outposts or settlements to the wilderness.

Agreed. Sona's been ranting, at length, for awhile now, that her needs are greater than even what a city can provide. Putting together a hamlet of any description would be a step towards actually achieving some of these things that she needs to grow as a craftsperson, in her mind. OOCly, I don't mind, or care, if -every- hamlet gets wiped off the face of the lost lands, but I don't want to get into the mindset of quashing Sona's RP, because something will be, or is likely to be stonewalled by a GM.

Sona's even posted requests in Mistral Lake and Haiban about seeking information and details on some of these things. I do feel like some of these things should be city things, more than anything, but I've come up with some arguments on the boards that do at least make some sense to me, about why large spaces are difficult to secure for personal uses. but if riln can't solve Sona's dilemmas, then she obviously feels that she needs to try and tackle her desires and problems herself, or also by enlisting like minded individuals to help establish a hamlet or something to that effect.

Sona's queries have largely been IC lately, as I've felt the board queries had been hitting dead ends.

example thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=5682 - Storage space options suitable for Sona's desires, are pretty hard to consider. Sona'd be the equivalent of a high end, high production artisan. One of her current projects has been annoying her, because keeping track of numbers has been annoying, because storage.

Just gotta say, I love what Sona is doing with all this. Thinking big and having big plans is pretty interesting. Keep it up, even if it might not lead to anything anytime soon with the current state in the game, which is nobodies fault really Ill just put in.

In the last few days with studying structures, Sona has been making small brick molds using clay. Testing out various mixtures, seeing what sort of bricks are produced and their quality. She continues asking around about masons and carpenters who may have some experience in this field.
