ESP Colors

So I was thinking about ESP colors, and I got to wondering about exactly how choosing a color or changing a color works ICly.

Is it considered a conscious decision by a person, or could it be considered a natural manifestation of something in a person's mind that some reason comes out this color in a telepathic network? And I guess changes of color could represent some sort of change in the personality of someone, or a way they view themselves.

I'm leaning towards the first logically, but part of me loves the idea of the second route I've mentioned :)

It's a conscious decision. That's not saying that some people can't subconsciously choose or change ESP colors when they themselves change, go through a traumatic experience, and so on.
