When your character takes over

I am having great difficulty playing my character. He is not my usual style of character, and I dislike or am even annoyed by many of the things he ends up doing. I have considered many times to abandon him and go for something I am more used to, yet he is growing on me. He is slowly taking over, so that it feels more natural, as if I am not fully in control of him.
I wanted to say that I was disappointed with some of the things he did tonight (though not others - I enjoy being on the other side of the majority, and it was interesting to be in that position as a "good guy"), but it was apparently who Alexander is, and I am enjoying seeing him grow and develop as a character, along with observing the same with other characters.
