Pulp Fiction for CLOKers - Solomon Kane by R.E. Howard

Post by Lemuel »

I would have to somewhat recommend the original stories of Solomon Kane by pulp master Robert E. Howard as rather similar to the theme of Clok MUD. These stories were written circa 1930's. Kane is a Puritan swordsman who travels Europe and Africa seeking evil to vanquish. I have to make my recommendation with some reservations because I know the history of of the Puritans and in a number of ways was not representative of these people.

Kane's dress and arms fit in with those of the a CLOK-themed world: [h]"He is dressed entirely in black and his weaponry consists of a rapier, a cutlass, and a brace of flintlock pistols."[/h] (from the Wikipedia entry, which mentions his use of a musket as well in one tale.)

The entry on Wikipedia is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Kane

and some cover art for compilations of Howard's Kane stories are pictured here

ISBN-10: 0345461509 for the Savage Tales of Solomon Kane anthology (Del Rey Books. 2004 paperback)

ISBN 10: 0671876953 for the Baen paperback edition

ISBN-10: 1400162289 for the MP3 Audiobook

[h]The Kindle edition is only 99 cents and can be read on your computer or smartphone if you don't have a Kindle.[/h]

I decline to comment on the recent film of the same name, the Savage Worlds Role-Playing game, and the Solomon Kane comics; as these three are contemporary interpretations of Robert E. Howard's creation - these stand or fall on their own merits and I'll let others review them.

Hi Kiyaani, Thanks. I re-phrased my last paragraph to make it more neutral.

I was expecting something about the movie by Tarantino. :(
Morgoth, I cried
All hope is gone but I swear revenge
Hear my oath
I will take part in your damned fate
