Certainly, ignoring the OOC community completely is a viable way to play the game, and for some that may be the best way to get the most enjoyment out of the game. If accepting others opinions and views of you as a player and/or the characters you play is difficult or painful, or if you can't find yourself in agreement for other reasons, then I can see why you would want to do so.

That said, I feel as though that is missing the point of playing a game with collaborative storytelling elements in some ways, because working together and socializing with other players on an OOC level can sometimes benefit and enrich your experience of the game. It is as you have pointed out: you can meet many great people, and playing with friends is oftentimes much more powerful than just interacting with some name on the screen.
