I think that the repair system in place is neat, but for any item of quality higher than average, is much too punishing. In the first place, each round takes 40 seconds to complete and only rewards the repairer with 0.01 leatherworking, and if you're getting a skilled leatherworker (who can make mastercrafted and exquisite pieces easily) with around 300 leatherworking to repair the piece, the quality easily shoots down from superior to average after three or four repair rounds.
My main complaint is how quickly quality is destroyed after a simple repair job. At the time, it's more efficient to actually order a new set of armor than to get it repaired--my superior set would be an average set after one repair job, which I find kind of disturbing.
I noticed that yes, it takes no leather for now to repair a piece of armor, but I'd rather it take a piece of leather to repair in order to keep its quality than for the quality to drop regardless of skill level.

I think it's unanimous amongst the GMs as well that player repairs are in a bad place right now. Requiring some material in order to repair is a good idea. I think most people think as you do - they'd rather just make a new piece than repair an existing one. Roundtimes are too high, quality loss is far, far too likely and to severe.
All this in the name of making traders the "best" at repairing is a bit much, in my opininon. We won't even get started on the "Are traders traders, or are they crafters?" debate.

Armor durability is fine to me. Ruining an exquisite piece after one repair is the problem. I can make exquisite and masterful armor from scratch, I should be able to repair it without destroying it. On the other side, I do think repairs should slowly degrade quality still. Armor doesn't last forever, you have to replace it eventually.
