Coup de Mort - The "Blow of death"

Post by Landion »

This one is a rather scary ability. Expect plenty of tweaking to its mechanics as it has the potential to be quite powerful.

I made a small update to Coup this to reflect how the skill roll is multiplied by the various bonus factors.

Instead of an inflated offensive number, you will now see something like:

(Off: 500 x Bonus: 0 vs Def: 500)

If the bonus is 0, obviously you have no chance to succeed in the Coup. However, the more factors which add up, the higher the chance a coup can succeed.

You rush toward an infested merchant with your iron falchion slicing through the air!
With a flick of your wrists you cut deep into an infested merchant's neck! (Off: 693 x Bonus: 1.35 vs Def: 100)
208 slash damage to the neck!
An infested merchant has been defeated.
Roundtime: 6 seconds.

Nasty shot.

You rush toward an infested merchant with your iron battle-flail raised high! With a sudden thrust you slam it directly into an infested merchant's right eye! (Off: 747 x Bonus: 2.25 vs Def: 100)
177 crush damage to the right eye!
An infested merchant has been defeated.
Roundtime: 6 seconds.

The THRUST in there seems a bit awkward with Chained Weaponry.

Fixed. I hadn't added in an option for chained weapons, so it was defaulting to a generic message for crush damage.

Should coup even be possible with a whip? They're very nonlethal weapons, meant more for disabling than doing any real damage, let alone killing.

I made it so that whips will not work with this maneuver before I even read Rias' post. So, I'm glad we agree.

Seeing as whips can be used in the off hand.. If I whip someone's legs from under them, the whip being in my off hand, I can 'Coup de Mort'?

Why don't you go test it out with a mercenary you know?

It's likely Charge or Hamstring followed by a Coup are way more effective. I'll test ;)

I'm not sure I'm understanding the question. Using a whip to knock someone down via its special effect is useful as a coup setup, yes. You still can't use the whip itself to deliver the actual death blow, though.

Even dual-wielding. You use it to trip an opponent. Then you can Coup if your MAIN weapon surpassed the roll to coup an opponent. Then sure. Coup successful.

Hah. Found this funny. Tried to coup with a revolver and ended up just pistol-whipping the poor guy.

coup
You rush toward a limping infested merchant with your steel-barreled revolver raised high! With a sudden thrust you slam it directly into a limping infested merchant's chest! (Off: 848 x Bonus: 2.25 vs Def: 100)
197 crush damage to the chest!
Several broken ribs driven into the chest! Shish-ka-merchant.
A limping infested merchant has been defeated.
Roundtime: 6 seconds.

It sounds to me more like you skewered the poor guy on the barrel.

The barrel would be piercing damage, but crushing, as you'd thrust not slam.

I just hope you cleaned the gun before you tried to shoot it again! Gross!
