Request for Wide Variety of Weapon Specialization options

Post by Kent »

Mercenaries are the guild that focuses the most on excellence in combat. Currently, when they've made sufficient progression, they can choose to specialize in one (only) of the following: Polearms, Swords, Hafted Weapons, or Chained Weapons.

However, a mercenary may not wish to select one of the four offered weapon types, for example, he may want to be a 'Little John' and be the top quarterstaffer of the Lost Lands; or he may want to be the best knife fighter east of the Ebonwood Pass.

So my request is that using the same pattern as the existing four specialization choices, the following weapon options be added, from which the mercenary can select one only to be his specialization:

Archery
Brawling
Daggers
Firearms
Hurl Weapon
Shield Use
Staves
Two-Weapon Combat
Whips

Thus we might see the following:

ask Maddison for ability 18

The Mercenary Captain Maddison says, "Expert training in daggers."

(Instant +50 points to Daggers skill. When wielding a dagger, 10% bonus to accuracy, increased chance to land additional strikes with appropriate weapons, and potentially increased minimum or maximum damage. NOTE: You may only specialize in ONE weapon type!)

Prerequisites:
Daggers skill: 150
Ability: Basic Weapons Training
Ability: Basic Melee Training
Ability: Tactics Mastery

[and a similar choice for brawling, archery, and the other possible weapon types]

Note that this request, if granted, would not give an increased number of abilities to a Mercenary; it would only increase the variety of weapon choices in an existing ability.

An alternative to coding it it the guild codebase: If coding this into the game is not simple, and as it is a seldom-requested matter, perhaps an e-mail request could be sent to the GM's and a GM could manually implement one of these additional specialization options for the eligible mercenary?
