Pickaxe Breakage

I think pickaxes are degrading unusually quickly. It takes less than one wagonload of ore to take a bronze pickaxe from fresh out of the repair shop to heavily damaged again.
I've ordered a steel pickaxe so I'll let you know the different materials compare. How have other people been faring?
