Very dirty gems!

I notiecd when you mine a gem, it usually weighs about 15 pounds. After you're done polishing it, it's less than 2 pounds. Is that 14 pounds of dirt and stone we're grinding off a tiny gem in the middle, or could we maybe have the rough gems weigh a lot less to begin with?
