Considering quartz is a type of gem and not a metal, this is working as intended.
You basically melted the gemstone down to ash, or a tiny pool of melted mush.
Be careful what you put into a fiery furnace! It might not come back out.
You might try GEM POLISHing and GEM FACETing quartz at the gemcrafters lean-to inside the mine instead.

You likely had a chunk of copper in there, possibly left over from someone else who forgot to remove it.
Your quartz would have dissapeared while the bar would have remained.
