Hunting and corpses

So I don't know if this is how it works or not but lets say I'm hunting a deer.
I get the deer to start bleeding badly and it runs off, and dies from energy loss in a room to my east directly. I go east and there's no corpse of the deer so my kill was wasted.
Can this be fixed? Its either the corpses disappearing or somehow the animals are despawning because I'll be tracking one and it'll just vanish, peering in all directions does nothing, do they hide or something?
